As often as woman may complain about having a menstrual cycle, the fact is that it is hard to find a woman who looks forward to menopause. The simple fact is that menopause is a very hard time for women to go through. In a lot of ways it can be compared to having a second puberty but in this case the woman is very aware of her menopause symptoms as well as the affect her symptoms have on the people who are in her life. You need to understand the different symptoms of menopause so that you can be a good support system for the women in your life who have to go through “the change”. Here are some symptoms to keep an eye out for if your wife, mother, girlfriend or daughter is around the age that menopause usually starts.

One of the most recognizable menopause symptom is the “hot flash”. The hot flash is the feeling of suddenly being way too hot. A hot flash causes a woman’s face to flush and she will start sweating. It is kind of like somebody temporarily turning up the temperature of your body way too high. Some will tell you that it is not all that different than a hyped up version of the feeling you get when you leave a cold room and go out into a hot sunny day. Menopause hot flashes can happen any time during the night or the day. When the hot flashes happen at night they are often called “night sweats.”

One of the cruelest symptoms of menopause makes a women feel as though she’s pregnant. Feeling tired all of the time is only one of the symptoms that might mimic pregnancy but also be menopause. When a premenopausal woman experiences fatigue so great that she can’t help but sleep often this is called “crashing” fatigue. This is more than feeling “a little tired”. The type of fatigue I am talking about is bad enough you might not be physically capable of getting out of bed. It could become so strong that she cannot get through her day without taking several naps. If you witness a woman in your life experiencing severe fatigue symptoms, talk to her about seeing her OB/GYN to determine if menopause is the cause.

An increased itching sensation is one of the menopause symptoms that is often overlooked. Some of the women going through menopause say that their skin is always itchy and that sometimes it feels like their skin is crawling. This is different from the sensation of simple dry skin.

Some people compare it to the sensation of having ants crawling under the skin. This is one of the more disturbing symptoms especially if you don’t know what is happening to you. If you feel itchier than usual and constantly want to scratch, call your doctor. You might have developed a simple skin condition. It could also be a sign of impending menopause (or actual menopause). Menopause symptoms are widely varied. No two women experience the exact same symptoms in the exact same ways. Some only have to deal with mild symptoms. For others they are strong and debilitating. If you understand the symptoms of menopause you will have an easier time dealing with them and the others in your life will deal with them better as well. These are just some of the symptoms you might go through. You should talk to your doctor so that you can learn what else to watch for.
